Instagram Introduces Digital Collectibles Feature

According to Mark Zuckerberg, Meta will begin testing digital collectibles and NFTs on a limited number of Instagram users this week.

NFTs will be available as profile images for a small set of Instagram producers and collectors in the US. It is similar to what other social media sites like Twitter have done recently.

According to the business, users in the test group would be able to post NFTs for free by integrating their third-party digital wallets in-app. The NFTs will receive a distinctive “shimmer” around the shot, with credit to both the inventor and the owner.

Ethereum and Polygon are among the supported blockchains, with Flow and Solana set to arrive soon, according to a company spokeswoman. MetaMask, Rainbow, and Trust Wallet are among the third-party wallets that will work with the platform, including Coinbase, Dapper, and Phantom.

For more than a year, Meta has been working on developing digital collectibles and NFTs for their social networks. According to a Facebook official, one of the important areas for getting involved in this industry is digital collectibles integrated with financial products.

In June 2021, Instagram was discovered to be exploring digital collectibles. The function was not generally available to users at the time. Still, users will be able to bid on collectibles, see a bidding price, a countdown to when the auction closes, and the option to post the collectible in Story.

Adam Mosseri introduced the debut by releasing a drop made for the Instagram team by Lucas Lohr. The tool will now be offered to a small set of users who may link their digital wallets, publish their collectibles, and have the collector and creator instantly tagged on the digital collective post.

The selective rollout was announced with limited information; the initial phase of the feature stated that collectibles would have a special tab on Profile where all collectibles would be shown, and users would be capable of connecting their digital wallets.

Instagram will operate as a common ground between a seller, buyer, or intermediary for the sale of collectibles with the launch of this service, much as it connects a consumer to a brand.

Although features to enable the sale and complete the transaction would necessitate alliances and country-specific agreements, users would be able to make in-app purchases without leaving the game. Instagram’s built-in framework already allows for content distribution, which is critical for determining whether assets have considerable popularity or virality and, thus, their monetary value.

The announcement comes following rumors that Meta might enable NFTs from Polygon, Ethereum, and Solana. In the first quarter, Meta recorded a $2.9 billion loss for its Metaverse branch, Reality Labs, which is re-invested into the company’s metaverse activities.
