Adobe released an update to its 3D Painting Tool – Substance Painter – to bring it to new heights of maneuverability, optimization, and definition.
The new Adobe 3D tools will help artists optimize creative workflow to import UDIM images from existing sources, paint across UV Tiles, and export easily to renderers or engines that support UDIMs and at much higher resolutions to make the texturing workflow lighter and faster.
The most amazing characteristics of the new Adobe 3D tools are:
- Export textures at least 60% faster.
- Bakes load asynchronously and thus takes less space. Files are on average 20% lighter.
- Open large files faster: viewport textures computation launches when the user selects the texture set.
- Save projects at least 30% faster, saving only what has changed since the prior save.
- When working on a mask in the viewport, only the mask is updated, not the texturing.
Now, artists can gain time pausing computation. Moreover, multiple costly actions like the application of several smart materials on a complex project will now be queued until the computation is un-paused, triggering calculations.
New Workflow, Familiar Interface
The set-up is to just opt-in the UV Tiles (UDIMs) workflow with the first new UV Tiles project in Substance Painter. Use your .FBX or Alembic mesh with UDIMs.
All you need is to import a UDIM image sequence from your resource and drag and drop it in the new fill layer. Thereafter, each texture will automatically be assigned to its respective tile.
The UV Tiles workflow is new but it has been kept familiar that makes it easy for users to adapt to the updated version. For instance, better control over bakes is achieved when choosing a texture set or UV Tile to bake.
Baking Map for UV Tiles (UDIM)
Users can make use of their favorite generators across UV Tiles with them behaving exactly as expected. They are just required to apply the generator across UV tiles and experience an entire asset getting seamlessly shiny.
The UV Tile Mask lets the discard of a tile or more. Masking a UV Tile will also be an excellent choice for optimizing workflow when working with a large or complex project.
UV Tile Mask and Painting Across UV Tiles (UDIM)
Exporting is simple and quick with all export presets updated to make sure all textures will be named properly with the UDIM convention.
Everything exported by you is ready to get imported in any engine or renderer that supports UDIMs, such as Arnold in Maya or the latest version of Unreal Engine 4.
