Facebook has announced that it would allow users to set up physical security keys to verify their identity from 2021. The move is to help users get verified before logging into the social networking platform.
Currently, Facebook allows users to put in a hardware security key before they log-in with a desktop computer every time. Facebook, which is the world’s largest social network, is planning to expand its Facebook Protect.
The security program of Facebook is for high-profile accounts, which include election candidates and several various accounts globally. The new security services by Twitter comes up after the July hack of peer social network Twitter Inc that had to compromise many celebrity accounts. The accounts also include that incumbent president Joe Biden and Tesla Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk.
Facebook Protect is currently available in the United States and offers services to politicians, government agencies, and election staff. Facebook came up with this high-security system because many accounts faced additional threats during the election cycle.
Candidates, elected officials, federal and state departments and agencies, and party committees, as well as their staff, have to enroll their accounts to get the facility of Facebook Protect. This will help their stores have a two-factor authentication and also monitor potential hacking threats. With this security-verification, Facebook can also discover the source of the attack and prevent it from attacking any other profiles or accounts.
In a statement, Facebook mentioned that Facebook Protect will also be available to journalists and human rights activists who are usually at higher risks of being targeted by hackers.
Presently, Facebook makes sure that their users are using strong passwords to keep their accounts secure. Also, they are enabling two-factor authentication as a primary security method. Facebook users also get alerts when their account is logged in from an unrecognized device.
