A bold move by the Government of India against the Chinese technology companies has been initiated.
The Central Government of India has announced a ban on 59 China-linked mobile applications in India on the grounds of national security and integrity. The list includes popular social media applications such as TikTok. The Center has decided to prohibit the use of this application on both mobile and non-mobile internet-enabled devices.
This decision is made amidst the continuing standoff between India and China on the border. Tensions on the Indo-China border increased after 20 troops, including an Indian commanding officer, died in action.
The list of China-linked applications that have been banned also includes Helo, Likee, Cam Scanner, Vigo Video, Mi Video Call, Xiaomi, and Clash of Kings along with eCommerce platforms Club Factory and Shein.
The order issued by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) stated: “The 59 Chinese apps that have been banned by the Government of India “are prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defense of India, the security of the state and public order.”
The order added: “This move will safeguard the interests of crores of Indian mobile and internet users. This decision is a targeted move to ensure the safety and sovereignty of Indian cyberspace.”

India has established itself as a leading innovator in technological advancements and as a market leader in digital space in recent years. At the same time, there are many concerns about data security and data protection of 130 million Indians.
The Indian Ministry of Information and Technology said that it had received many complaints from various sources, including reports about the misuse of several mobile applications available on the Android and iOS platforms. According to the reports, these apps are intended to steal users’ data and secretly transmit users’ data in an unauthorized manner to servers outside India.
The Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-IN) has also received several statements from citizens about violations of privacy and data that affect public policy issues.
Based on the grievances and recent credible evidence received that such applications threaten India’s sovereignty and integrity, the government has decided to ban the use of specific applications.
The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) said: “The ban will be a big support to its ‘Boycott Chinese Goods’ campaign.”
In a blog statement, Praveen Khandelwal, CAIT Secretary-General, said: “This huge, unprecedented step will go a long way in strengthening the ‘Boycott China’ campaign of CAIT. The Boycott China movement is now well and truly a national reality, and seven crore traders of India stand in solidarity with the Union Government.”
